The Wirral International Film Festival was conceived in 2007 by Film-makers,Alan Veste and Phil Bimpson.   They wanted at first to give a platform for local film- makers to show their films to the public. They also decided to include Wirral’s sister towns and provinces which were,Latina in Italy, Lorient and Gennevilliers in France and Midland Texas in U.S.A. So anyone with a Wirral connection were allowed to submit. Whilst organising the event in 2008 they found that there wasn’t any funding available so took it upon themselves to carry on regardless because they believed in the project. So at their own expense they promoted and made contacts with everyone involved. They sourced a venue to host the event and then bought a projector and screens. The films then started arriving and to their amazement 100 different film-makers from across Wirral submitted their work. The genres included, Music, Feature Film,Documentary, Shorts and Animation. Alan & Phil then flew to France and Italy to make connections with their film- makers. While they were in Italy they met with the Director of The Latina Film Commission,Snr. Rino Piccolo who showed great interest in what they were doing and has proceeded to give his support and collaboration to this date. Through their research they discovered that the Director Alan Clarke ( Scum, The Firm,Made in England, Rita, Sue and Bob Too) was born in Wirral but has since passed away. They decided that they would honour him with an award dedicated in his memory for any film- maker with outstanding skills. His family attend each year on the award night to present “The Alan Clarke Award”.Awards are also presented in all the other categories to film-makers. Since it’s conception the Wirral International Film Festival has grown from strength to strength with more submissions every year. Interest has been that keen that the organisers then decided to open up the Festival worldwide to all film makers. The Film Festival is a free event, however they are still looking for sponsors, which could be in the form of sponsoring a trophy or the award night itself. Now here we are 10years later 2017,
